"Mild" update on Chan-wook Park's "Thirst"

With little to no news available on Thirst (try searching, most everything is from 2008), these pictures are kind of a big deal. The story centers around a priest who volunteers for a medical experiment that goes wrong, inadvertantly turning him into a vampire. That's really all we know at this point. Speculation is for a possible April 2009 release but no firm date has been announced. Find the pictures at this link: http://twitchfilm.net/site/entry-images/category/C260/

On a slightly related note, we have heard of the possible Will Smith remake of Oldboy (which he has claimed will be based on the original manga, not the film) but now it seems that Charlize Theron is talking about remaking "Sympathy for Lady Vengeance", which she will supposedly star in. Recent talk has centered on Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire, 28 Days Later) as the possible choice for director. Chan-wook Park has apparently given his "ok" to the remake.

Does anyone else find it strange that there is enough interest in these films to remake them but (apparently) not enough interest to offer a wide release of the originals in theaters in the U.S.?? So many times what makes an original film so worthwhile is what is jettisoned for a remake to make it more palatable.....but then what's the point?

Agreed - it's sad that the film industry is so scared to take chances on new and innovative material and instead hedges their bets by co-opting "edgier" and more "exotic" films from their foreign counterparts. They even cannibalize at home - seriously, does Friday the 13th really need to be redone?
